Groningen Institute for Central and Eastern European Studies

The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine came as a surprise to many. It demonstrated a clear lack of knowledge about the complex relations between nations, peoples and the domestic politics and social developments in Central and Eastern Europe. Developments in this region often have direct political, economic and social consequences elsewhere in Europe and around the world..

The Groningen Institute for Central and Eastern Studies (GICEES) focusses on  doing academic research, organising and hosting cultural events and facilitating business with the  region. It replaces the Centre for Russian Studies and will in the future also subsume the activities of the Netherlands Russia-Centre. At the same time, it remains part of the University of Groningen.

Special relations RUG - Groningen and Central and Eastern Europe
The University of Groningen has a longstanding tradition of research in and education about Central and Eastern Europe. The Faculty of Arts pays special attention to the region in its study and research programmes. This is done in the study programmes of History, International Relations and Organisations (IRIO) and European Languages and Cultures. The faculties of Economics and Business, Law, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Medicine also have specialised knowledge on the region.

The institute aims to facilitate interchange between specialists of diverse fields of research and/or countries.

Culture: Research and Education
On a cultural level the institute provides an emphasis on the study of the Central and Eastern European societies, history, culture and language. All done in the broadest sense of  doing research. The institute is equipped with a research library and is therefore located in the University of Groningen’s Library (UG).

Employees and students of the University and interested third parties can access various available databases and information that is normally only accessible through paid services.

Culture: Public activities
The institute provides a diverse range of public activities such as lectures and seminars. These are available to all. For sworn interpreters and translators in the Netherlands it is possible to attend these seminars in correspondence with the requirements for mandatory professional education.

Business
Companies within the Benelux that want to explore the Central and Eastern European markets can contact us for services such as matchmaking, market research, advice and support, daily support, and for the acquisition of a diverse range of import and export subsidies. This possibility also exists for the countries of Central Asia (Stan countries), with an emphasis on Kazakhstan.

Through the cultural and business based expertise of our employees the institute aims to successfully build bridges between researchers, companies and the regions and markets in which they are active.
